Srimathi Usharani Subramaniam is a prominent figure in the world of Bharathanatyam. Her journey in this classical dance form began at the young age of four, and she later graduated from Bhaskar’s Academy of Dance. Recognized as a child prodigy at the age of nine, she was awarded a gold medal by the Mayor of Penang. Usharani soon became a household name, performing for foreign dignitaries, in temples, on television, and at special events.<\/p>\n
She has represented Singapore in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Holland and Texas, USA. As a dance guru, smt Usharani Subramaniam started teaching at Community Centres and schools in 1976 where they have participated in Youth Festival and many of the items were awarded gold.<\/p>\n
As a choreographer, Usharani has created dance dramas for children\u2019s television programs (Siruvar Nigalchigal) and staged four live mega productions: Shivautsavam (2000), Shakuntala (2005), Aalaya Maha Utsavam (2015), and Natpu (2018). Furthermore, the dance academy was invited to perform at the Hindu temple in Perth, Australia on June 7th, 2022, for a grand fundraising show. The event was a success, raising $60,000 for the academy. Her talent and dedication are evident in the achievements of her students, with over 60 performing their arangetrams in the past 60 years and six presenting solo dance programs for charity.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Usharani Maniam Dance Academy represented Singapore at the Shivarathiri festival in India, performing at revered temples such as Tanjavur (big temple), Kumbakonam, and Chidambaram. These performances were highly praised and highlighted in newspaper reports. To mark Singapore\u2019s SG50 celebration, Usharani\u2019s academy performed dance dramas (Aalaya Maha Utsavam) for the opening of Kalyana Mandapams at Perumal and Thandayuthapani Temple, which was a proud moment for the academy and its students.<\/p>\n
Last year was particularly exceptional for Usharanimaniam Dance Academy. In July, her students staged a three-day performance titled Nava Nartanam at the Esplanade during Kalaa Utsavam, earning high praise. In November, her students also took part in the festival’s closing event at the Esplanade\u2019s outdoor amphitheatre.<\/p>\n
Srimathi Usharanimaniam\u2019s outstanding contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including titles such as Natya Thilagam (Jewel of Dancers) from the Indian Movie News Club, Nritya Kala Nipuna from Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society, Natya Kala Mani from Sri Bala Subramaniam Temple, and the Singa Gama Award for Life Achievement and Contribution to Classical Indian Dance. She has also received a 20-year Long Service Award from the People\u2019s Association and most recently the title Natya Archariya Mani from Apsaras Arts.<\/p>\n
Srimathi Usharanimaniam’s illustrious career and enduring dedication to the art of Bharathanatyam make her a celebrated and respected figure in the dance community. Over the years, she has not only excelled as a dancer but has also played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of artists through her teaching and choreography.
