Kavitha Krishnan
IHFS EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR SERVING THE SPECIAL NEEDS COMMUNITY
Kavitha Krishnan’s impressive career encompasses both her accomplishments as a dancer representing Singapore internationally and her impactful contributions to the arts community, especially in the context of social causes and diversity and inclusion.
Kavitha is the co-founder-creative director of Social Enterprise, Apsara Asia Pte Ltd and in 2007, she co-founded Maya Dance Theatre (MDT), a non-profit arts company with Imran Manaff, dedicated to utilizing the arts as a powerful tool for social change and promoting positive impact. MDT received SEED Grant from National Arts Council (2015-2018).
From 2018 under Kavitha’s leadership and leveraging her background as an occupational therapist, as part of MDT’s community initiative, she created a space where dancers with diverse abilities, collaborate with professional dancers. Diverse Abilities Dance Collective, DADC’s purpose is to celebrate differences, promote inclusion, and showcase the potential of artistic expression to bridge gaps and promote understanding among people of all abilities including seniors.
Kavitha has received awards and recognitions for her contributions in the past and to name a few, Artistic Excellence Award felicitated by late Mr & Mrs Sathyalingams, Women with an Heart from Singapore Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SICCI, 2019), Natya Kala Nipuna title from Baskher’s Academy (2022) and finalists of the Silent Hero Award (2022).
Kavitha’s artistic journey exemplifies the incredible potential of the arts, emphasizing the transformative power in addressing societal challenges and as a medium to build connections, convey messages and uplift individuals and communities. Kavitha strongly believes in, Dance and Healing; dance as a medium for community building.
