IHFS EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR SPORTMAN – WEIGHT-LIFTING

Sarvindar Singh Chopra, the multiple SEA Games gold-medallist, uttered profound words when faced with adversity after an accident left him with a broken elbow. These words encapsulated his unwavering spirit and determination, highlighting his belief that retiring as champions is far superior to succumbing to defeat. Despite the setback, Sarvindar’s journey remains a testament to resilience and passion in the face of challenges.

Known by the moniker “One Man, Three Sports,” Sarvindar harbored a lifelong dream of witnessing the Singapore flag ascend triumphantly while the national anthem, Majullah Singapura, echoed in the background. His early years were dedicated to honing his skills in the Discus Throw, a discipline in which he achieved notable success. Despite facing disappointment in his initial foray into international competition at the 7th SEAP Games, Sarvindar refused to be deterred, demonstrating a tenacious resolve that would define his sporting career.

Judo also held a special place in Sarvindar’s heart, and he embraced a rigorous training regimen to excel in this martial art. His dedication bore fruit when he proudly represented Singapore at the ASEAN Invitational Championship, securing his first gold medal for his country. However, it was in the realm of weightlifting that Sarvindar experienced a transformative moment.

Initially drawn to weightlifting as a means to enhance his power and strength for the Discus Throw, Sarvindar found himself under the tutelage of Olympic silver medallist Tan Howe Liang. Under Liang’s guidance, Sarvindar flourished in the sport, participating in numerous national and regional competitions with ever-improving performances. His relentless pursuit of excellence culminated in a fervent desire to claim gold at the 11th SEA Games in the Philippines.

The 11th SEA Games held significance beyond mere athletic competition for Singapore. Amidst a drought of medals for the nation, Sarvindar emerged as a beacon of hope on the fourth day of the event, which coincided with the weightlifting competition. Against the odds, he secured not one but two gold medals, realizing his long-cherished dream and igniting a wave of national pride. As Sarvindar stood atop the winners’ podium, tears of joy streaming down his face, Singapore celebrated a total of 12 gold medals, two of which were attributed to his remarkable feats.

Sarvindar’s message to aspiring athletes resonates deeply: Live your dreams, dream big and work hard in realizing your dreams. As a living testament to this ethos, his journey stands as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path forged by perseverance, dedication, and steadfast belief in one’s aspirations. His unyielding spirit in the face of challenges embodies the essence of genuine champions, etching a lasting legacy in the tapestry of Singapore’s sporting triumphs.
